Meta Quest 3: Laughing in the Face of Reality

Questing for Reality in a Virtual Economy

Meta Quest 3Just when you thought the world was starting to make sense, we’re back at it again. This year, the race for Virtual Reality supremacy has taken some interesting turns. Picture the tech giant equivalent of a schoolyard tussle, with Meta quest 3, Sony, HTC, and the mighty Apple all vying for the chance to strap screens to our faces and call it progress.

First up, we have the PlayStation VR 2, which has been released alongside the PlayStation 5 – that elusive mythical creature no one can seem to capture. At this point, the PlayStation VR 2 feels like the expensive earrings you’d buy to go with a dress that’s still in the mail. Sure, it’s pretty, but what’s the point if you can’t flaunt it?

On the other hand, we have the Vive XR Elite, HTC’s flagship headset, complete with an ironically cool name. The problem is, it’s as if HTC thinks we’re all living in a virtual reality already, with Bitcoin fortunes to burn on their elite-level pricing.

The Battle of VR: Apple vs. Meta Quest 3

The real elephant in the VR room, or rather, the virtual Apple in the orchard, is the impending debut of Apple’s mixed-reality headset. At a whopping rumored price tag of $3,000, it’s as if Apple didn’t get the memo that we’re in the middle of a global economic crunch. Maybe they’re banking on us selling our real-world possessions to afford a more luxurious virtual life.

Meta Quest 3Then, we have our friend Meta and their much-anticipated Quest 3. After the Quest Pro’s laughably high price and subsequent tumble down the discount aisle, it seems Meta is planning to bring the Quest 3 back to the realm of affordability. I mean, it’s only fair, considering they’re asking us to live in a virtual metaverse while still grappling with the reality of paying real-life rent.

From depth sensors to Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chips, the Quest 3 seems to be packing more tech than a NASA spaceship. Who knew we needed an onboard depth sensor to fully immerse ourselves in a game of virtual ping-pong?

VR and the Art of Ignoring Reality: Quest 3’s Gaming Focus

Meta Quest 3The real kicker though? Eye tracking. PlayStation VR 2 has it, Quest Pro has it, but Quest 3 might not. Perhaps Meta took a peek into our souls and didn’t like what they saw? Or maybe they’re just trying to dodge the whole ‘Big Brother is watching you’ vibe.

What’s more, amid all this tech hullabaloo, let’s not forget the noble Quest controllers. Meta updated their controllers for the Quest Pro, only to find out their budget didn’t include a shrink ray to size them down. Now they’re like oversized golf balls – only pricier and less useful on the green.

Still, amidst all this existential dread, VR does offer some glimmers of hope. The Quest 3 is expected to be more portable and gaming-focused. It offers new ways to ignore your responsibilities and forget the hellscape that is the real world.

Will any of these shiny new headsets live up to their hype? We’ll find out this fall. Until then, we’ll just be here, laughing in the dark, counting the pixels.
