UFO and National Security: From Flying Saucers to UAPs

75 years on, Circuses Around UFOs Still Haunt Us

The U.S. military is shooting down unidentified objects like they’re playing a game of Call of Duty. It’s like they’re trying to break their own record for the most UFOs was taken down in a week. What makes things more confusing is the message the government is putting out to the public. It’s like they’re playing a “ guess what we’re thinking” game with the public. Of course, when you want anything done, leave it to the government to explain what is happening. This Is the same thing that happen 75 years ago, when sightings of what are known as Unidentified flying objects, UFO, led to a media circus. This destabilizes legitimate investigation in what is now known as Unidentified aerial phenomena, UAP.

The circus hype still haunts us today. It’s like everyone is trying to become the next Fox Mulder. Ok fine, we have years of combat pilots reporting these sightings, but let’s be real, who knows what they were really seeing? Maybe they are tweaking from all the adrenaline. Nonetheless, Congress decided to get in on the action by passing legislation to investigate these UFOs. Well, because it works so well the first time, good luck. Hopefully, we can avoid the nonsense and confusion plaguing our first go at it this time.

The Media Frenzy of the Flying Saucer

It all started on June 24, 1947, with Kenneth Arnold, a businessman, and a pilot, who spotted nine unidentified objects flying at breakneck speed near Mounting Rainier. Being a good citizen, he reported the event to aviation officials. But when asked to describe the movement of the objects, he compared it to a saucer skipping across water. Desperate to make something of the story, the media jumped on it like a pack of hyenas on a wounded gazelle.

They twisted his words and change the story, making up details until the flying saucer became the new catchphrase of the day. It intrigant how we can turn a meaningless observation into a full-blown phenomenon. But who needs evidence when you can just invent a story and run with it?

How the Media Exploited the UFO Flying Saucer Story

Poor Arnold complains about being misread and misreported by the newspapers. As if they care about evidence when they’ve got a great story to sell. And boy did the flying saucer sell. Suddenly, everyone and their grandmother had seen something strange in the sky. It essentially became a competition on who could come up with the wildest story. And popular culture wasn’t far behind. Hollywood whipped out movie after movie about aliens and flying saucers. TV shows like The X-File made millions off the scheme of the unknown.

The joys of capitalism. When there’s a craze, you can always count on retailers to cash in to profit from it. Flying saucer wind-up toys, kids’ pajamas, and other trinkets, it was like we couldn’t get enough of the alien hype. Also, let’s not forget about the thousands of alleged detections of flying saucers. What the Air Force liked to call them, UFO.

The Government‘s Dismissal of UFO Findings

The government was so annoyed by these collective obsessions that they couldn’t help publicly dismissing the reports as mere fantasies of people’s imaginations. “It’s a weather balloon, “they’d say, or “you’re seeing things.” But behind the scenes, they knew that some sightings, especially the one reported by the military pilots were too significant to ignore. It’s like they wanted to reject the existence of UFOs while lowkey hoping that they were real.

It looks like the government officials weren’t as dismissive of UFO findings as they wanted us to believe. General Nathan Twining, head of the Air Force Material Command, even wrote a letter stating that the phenomenon was “something real and not visionary or fictitious.” He was referring to the craft that moved at extraordinary speeds and displayed extreme maneuverability. It was not a big deal, these vehicles were practically silent and left no trail behind, making them even more mysterious. Of course, the government was trying to keep the information hidden from the public but did a poor job doing so. Check out our latest article on the tension between US/Russia.
