Why Finland and Sweeden should Join NATO: Because We’re Tired of Being the Peaceful One
Let’s face it, being the peaceful one is boring. Sure, we’ve managed to avoid wars and conflicts for the most part, but where’s the fun in that? We want to join in on the action. So, what better way to do that than by joining NATO?
What does it mean for the Nordic states if they join the alliance?
With Finland and Sweeden as a member of NATO, they’ll be able to participate in the collective defense. Also, their Security in guaranteed under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This means we’ll be able to show off our military capabilities and make our enemies think twice before messing with us.
But it’s not just about showing off our strength, joining NATO will also increase stability in the Baltic Sea region. With Finland and Sweden as NATO members, the threshold for using military force in the area will rise. This will ensure that things stay calm and peaceful. And isn’t that what we all want? Peace and stability?
Why doesn’t Turkey want the Nordic state to join?
The two Nordic countries have been accepted by all NATO members, except for Turkey and Hungary. Turkey has been causing a bit of a stir, as it claims that Sweden has ties to Kurdish militant groups. The US and European Union consider the group as terrorists. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has demanded that Finland and Sweden must deport or extradite up to 130 “terrorists” to Turkey before their NATO application will be approved. But that’s not all.
In a further attempt to ramp up the tension, Russia has announced plans to create an army corps in a region that borders Finland. With the threat of war on the horizon, it’s no wonder why Finland and Sweden are looking for a way to protect themselves. However, despite all the recent news, it appears that the Cold War is not quite over yet.
With Turkey and Russia making demands and increasing their military presence, it’s safe to say that the two countries are still in a bit of a bind. Will they ever be able to join NATO and have the security and protection they need? Only time will tell.
