There’s nothing like the Sunshine State deciding it needs a little more, well, sunshine in the form of legalized recreational marijuana. In an inspiring “I have a dream” moment, Smart & Safe Florida collected nearly a million signatures for a constitutional amendment. The hope is to bring a slightly different kind of greenery to the land of palm trees and sandy beaches. And this, my friends, is no half-baked endeavor. So, now we enter the home of Governor Ron Desantis and ask the question, is recreational marijuana legal in Florida? let’s take a look.
The initiative is generously funded by Trulieve Inc., a company already knee-deep in the medical marijuana business. A whopping $38.4 million was spent to get this green baby rolling, making it clear they’re not just blowing smoke. I mean, who needs marketing when you can literally bankroll a constitutional amendment? Talk about a growth strategy.
The proposal, more fun than a Disneyland season pass, would allow adults 21 and over to possess up to three ounces of marijuana for personal use. Because nothing says “responsible adult” like someone with three ounces of weed. And it gets better. Medical marijuana treatment centers, already a hit since their legalization in 2016, would be allowed to sell marijuana for recreational use. Because, let’s be honest, who wants to fake back pain when they could simply buy the good stuff over the counter?
A Hazy Road to Legalization: Florida’s Pot Proposal Problem
There’s a buzzkill in our green paradise. The state’s Attorney General, Ashley Moody, is not quite as thrilled about the whole idea. Ms. Moody, who I suspect is living up to her last name, wants to rain on our parade by challenging the amendment at the Florida Supreme Court. Apparently, she’s of the opinion that the proposal does not comply with state law, which requires “clear and unambiguous language.” Hey, at least it doesn’t say “may contain traces of marijuana,” right?
On the brighter side, if this high-minded proposal does make it to the ballot, it could potentially boost voter turnout. Because nothing says civic duty like voting for the right to get legally stoned. Florida, previously carried by Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, But also a fan of Barack Obama in the preceding elections, is clearly a state that enjoys its plot twists. We’re yet to see how this joint… err, I mean point of contention influences the 2024 elections.
One Puff at a Time: Trulieve’s CEO Stands Firm on Cannabis in Florida
Trulieve, evidently eager to live up to its name, has high hopes pinned on Florida, its home state. Its CEO, Kim Rivers, has been pretty blunt about their intentions. As she puts it, they are “ready to experience the freedom to use cannabis for personal consumption.” Because it is currently enjoyed by more than half of America’s adults. Rivers is clearly making waves in the marijuana business, one puff at a time.
And so, as we hold our breath for the briefs due on July 12, the plot thickens. Will Florida swap its citrus for cannabis? Or will Ashley Moody manage to weed out this amendment before it takes root? Only time will tell. Until then, I guess we’ll all just have to roll with it.
